A Great Gulf Is Fixed

Text: Luke 16:19-26

The Great Gulf
Christ’s narration of the story of the life and death of Lazarus and the rich man gives us a peep into eternity.

On earth, the rich man fared sumptuously. He had all that money could buy but had no time to prepare for his eternal home. Lazarus, on the other hand, while on earth, lived a poor and miserable life. He had no money to get what he needed but had grace to prepare for his eternal home.

Eventually, both died. Lazarus would no longer feed on “the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table.” A “Great Gulf” is now fixed that eternally separates both of them. The rich man now desires the place of rest of Lazarus. The comfort he was used to on earth was no longer available in the torments of the flame where he now lives. Forever, the “Great Gulf” will remain fixed in eternity between the godly and the ungodly, the righteous and the unrighteous.

Like Abraham the friend of God, one day, we too will pass on. Cain shed the blood of his brother, Abel. Eventually, both died. Judas Iscariot sold his Master for few pieces of silver. He too died (Acts 1:18; Hebrews 9:27).

of all men. Hell is the place of torment for all men who live unrighteous, sinful lives like the rich man did. Heaven is the prepared abode for men who, like Lazarus, lived God-honouring and God-fearing life.

Men’s decision on earth will determine which side of the “Great Gulf” they will spend eternity. Jesus Christ is the only “Bridge” that links man to heaven. All other “bridges” men make for themselves will lead them to hell.

Christ shed His blood as the redemptive price for the salvation of whosoever will hearken and heed His invitation: “Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
