Is It Better To Die?

Text: Job 3; James 1:2-3; Hebrews 12:7

Key Verse: "After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth" (Job 3:1).

In this chapter we find that Job asks three very poignant questions. The first one is, Why was I ever born? Job hopes his birthday will be forgotten. He is looking back to the day of his birth, and, although he cannot change it, he is saying, May its anniversary be ignored. Let it be a day that is darkened; let no one rejoice in it. Let it be a day of cursing instead of blessing. The reason for Job's outcry is this was the day he was born, the day that produced him. You can see at this point how his life has become so miserable that he longs for death. Even all that he has enjoyed in the past seems of no value in the face of this tremendous anguish that he must endure.

Although Job comes very close to cursing God, he never does. He does curse the day of his birth, and he curses what God has allowed to happen. You can see how the pressure is increasing, and Job is beginning to break and crumble under it, as this unceasing, unexplained anguish goes on.

I do not think anything is harder for us to bear than unexplained trouble. If we could see some reason for what we have to go through, we could endure it much more easily. But when trouble seems to be pointless, it is a terrible strain on the soul. This is what Job is experiencing, so he cries out, Why was I ever born?

His second question is, Having been born, why didn't I die at birth? He says, My life has been totally meaningless. It would have been better to have died when I was born. Job views death as a time of rest, a period of solitude and quiet after the tumult and trouble of life. I think many people see death that way. These verses indicate that Job's understanding of life after death needs to be enlightened a great deal, and that is one of the reasons this suffering came into his life. At the end of the book, Job's view of death is quite different than it was at the beginning.

Job's third question is, Why can't I die now? Job's argument is, What's the purpose of my life? Of what use is a life that is so filled with misery that you can do nothing but suffer and feel anguish? My life produces only fear and trouble, so it would be better to end it now. Many people feel that way. I do not think Job is thinking of suicide – he is asking God to take him home. There is no purpose to life, he says, when it is not enjoyable. That is a very common argument, and one of the reasons we have been given this book is to help us understand that life can still have a great deal of meaning, even when it looks absolutely useless.

No Scar

Hast thou no scar?
No hidden scar on foot, or side, or hand?
I hear thee sung as mighty in the land,
I hear them hail thy bright ascendant star,
Hast thou no scar?

Hast thou no wound?
Yet I was wounded by the archers, spent,
Leaned Me against a tree to die; and rent
By ravening beasts that compassed Me, I swooned:
Hast thou no wound?

No wound, no scar?
Yet, as the Master shall the servant be,
And, pierced are the feet that follow Me;
But thine are whole: can he have followed far
Who has no wound nor scar?

9 Ways To Break God's Heart - Part 2

Remember, we earlier discussed that God has a heart, and that it can be broken. He has a heart with emotions like you and I.

*** Please click: "HERE" to read '9 Ways to Break God's Heart 1' ***

These, however, in no way indicate weakness on the part of God (as in the case of man). He is Almighty and none there is beside Him. He forever remains the same but like us, He has a heart and it can be broken. Here is the continuation from where we stopped.

Don't break God's heart.

6. Believing in God less. It is better explained as believing in yourself more and in God less. Who wouldn’t buy the motivational tip-off that you have to believe in yourself to succeed in life? But here do we forget that:

a. “…For by strength shall no man prevail.” (1 Samuel 2:9)

b. “It depends not on one’s own willingness nor on his strenuous exertion as in running a race, but on God’s having mercy on him.” (Romans 9:16)

c. “…The race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong, neither is bread to the wise nor riches to men of intelligence and understanding nor favour to men of skill; but time and chance happen to them all.” (Ecclesiastes 9:11); also check Psalm 33:16-19.

We allow motivational speakers cloud our thoughts with the “I can” spirit and place less emphasis on the “God can” spirit. It’s not wrong for one to believe in one’s self and abilities but it should be done to please God. Read what Apostle Paul said in 2 Corinthians 3:5-6 and understand better the position true believers should take in this regard. Also check (John 15:5-8; Proverbs 3:5-7; 16:3).

7. Denying Christ as the Saviour and Son of God. Arguments have gone viral as regards the person and identity of Jesus Christ. Recently, I read an article saying the Bible is false and that Christ was but a prophet like Jeremiah, Ezekiel and others. Some even doubt the miracles Jesus did, but then, everyone has a right to his or her own opinions.

True believers know better and can distinguish between Christ and Caesar. The entirety of the Bible centres of Jesus Christ as the Saviour and clearly tells of His person. However, due to controversies and my dearth of knowledge on this topic, I would crave your pardon to speak less on this but urge you study these Bible references with godly understanding (Isaiah 9:6; 40:9-11; 53:1-12; Luke 2:11; John 1:1-5; 10:7-42; Acts 4:12; Zechariah 6:12-13; and too many to mention). May the Holy Spirit guide you as you study and meditate on the truth of the Word.

8. Deceiving people about resurrection. Don’t be deceived; heaven and hell are real and disregard anyone telling you otherwise. Take not lightly the Gospel according to Luke account on this topic, though the book of Revelation says more that should convince you.

“And it occurred that the man begging died and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom.

“And he cried out and said, Father Abraham, have pity and mercy on me … for I am in anguish in this flame.” (Luke 16:22-24). Have you ever wondered what happens when your soul and spirit leaves the body? Where do you go after this life?

If in doubt whether you are a triune being or not – a spirit created in the image of God with a soul and dwelling in a body of clay – check 1 Thessalonians 5:23. And for further information on this, send us a message via the truth media and let’s encourage one another. We would love to hear from you.

9. Backsliding. Lastly, what can also break God’s heart is backsliding. “Remember Lot’s wife” (Luke 17:32; Genesis 19:26). The plan of our adversary, the devil, is to make us turn back from following Christ. His plan is to kill, steal and destroy and to make believers lose their salvation and grace by faith in Christ.

No wonder our Master, Jesus Christ, has urged us to watch and pray (Mark 14:38). The devil prowls like a roaring lion, seeking someone to seize upon and devour. (1 Peter 5:8-9). His targets are not those who dwell in sin-they are already his property till they accept God’s grace by faith in Christ- but Christians whom have given up the life of sin for a life of salvation, grace, peace and triumph in Christ.

In your walk with God, don’t stop trailing the narrow way. Though it’s hard and tiring, continue; though it’s filled with thorns and spikes, continue and don’t stop until you have truly won Christ like Apostle Paul (Philippians 3:7-14).

“Press on towards the goal to win the prize to which God in Christ Jesus is calling us, all true believers in Christ, to attain (Philippians 3:14), and do not forget that “it is only those who endure till the end that will be saved. (Matthew 10:22; 24:13).

Why should you die my friend? If you are yet to know Jesus Christ, you are breaking God’s heart. And until you do, you really have no life in you. Come to Jesus and find rest for your soul and life eternal (Matthew 11:28; Romans 6:23).

To all my brothers and sisters in Christ, run with patience and perseverance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:1-2). Don’t be conformed to this world or the things in it; don’t yield to the flesh anymore, for you have been bought with a price (1 Corinthians 6:18-20).

Hold on to the Saviour, Jesus; cast all your cares and burdens on Him and let not these words stop ringing in your head that: “No one who puts his hands to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:62).

Examine and be true to yourself now and determine whether your life has been breaking God’s heart, or you have been applauding those who wallow in sin. “The end of all things has now come near…” (1 Peter 4:7). Is your life pleasing to the Lord?

Remember, “…each of us shall give an account of himself or herself to God” (Romans 14:12; 2:6; 2 Corinthians 5:10). It is my prayer that you reading this piece make it to heaven eventually, for that’s where I am headed and shall attain by His grace. Don’t break God’s heart!

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the presence of the Holy Spirit be with you brethren. Amen.

9 Ways To Break God's Heart - Part 1

Don't break God's heart.

Isn’t it startling to know God Almighty (the Omniscient Creator of the entire universe), like you and I, has a heart and that it can be broken like that of Amanda who caught James, her boyfriend, under lust’s arrest in an impious coitus with her best friend?

Although He is a Spirit being (John 4:24), but God has a heart with emotions. He feels like us – He gets angry (Deuteronomy 6:15, Exodus 32:10); He laughs (Proverbs 1:26); He grieves (Genesis 6:6-7); He is jealous (Deuteronomy 6:15); and of all these features, He loves the most (John 3:16, Isaiah 43:4, Romans 5:8).

All these, however, in no way indicate weakness on the part of God (as in the case of man). He is Almighty and none there is beside Him. He forever remains the same but like us, He has a heart and it can be broken. Though, it can’t be broken to such an extent that He suddenly hibernates and stops being God. It’s different from that.

That’s why God takes the heart and matters of the heart seriously, and He doesn’t take it lightly when someone breaks His by acts of commission or omission. Hence, here are 9 ways I discovered (not limited to these) on how one can break God’s heart but with a warning that you flee from them all or face God’s wrath.

1. Living a life of sin and unrepentance. “…All have sinned and are falling short of the glory of God which God bestows” (Romans 3:23). From the days of Adam and Eve, sin has gained free rein in the life of man and its wage -death- has been unbearable.

Our world is perverse, corrupt and polluted. In the midst of a crooked and wicked generation, darkness and all forms of immorality rule. Entropy is the day’s order and our institutions - families, schools, churches, and the society at large are the victims.

Sodomy as in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah has returned. There is evil in high places, murder, assassinations, rape, drunkenness, lewdness, envy, strife, malice, infidelity, homosexuality and lesbianism, absurdity, greed, deceit, etc. and all these only draw the wrath and indignation of God.

Yet, like the rebellious Israelites of old (Ezekiel 2:3-8), the world fails to repent and forsake its sinful ways. People fail to “honour and glorify God…instead, they become futile and godless in their thinking… Though they are fully aware of God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve to die, they not only do them themselves but approve and applaud others who practise them.” (Romans 1:18-32). And it breaks the heart of God to see such ungodliness in the world.

2. Searing your heart. “The grace of God has appeared for the deliverance from sin and the eternal salvation for all mankind. It has trained us to reject and renounce all ungodliness and worldly desires, to live discreet, upright, devout lives in this present world…” (Titus 2:11-12), but we still have some who ignore and repel the good news (Gospel) of Christ, God’s power working unto salvation to everyone who believes (Romans 1:16).

Such people as stated in 2 Timothy 4 are those who will not tolerate sound instruction (doctrine), but having ears itchy… and will turn aside from hearing the truth and wander off into myths and man-made fictions. They have seared their hearts and won’t forsake devil’s bait. Their end is hell and this breaks God’s heart too.

3. Religious but not righteous. These are the Scribes and the Pharisees that the Bible talks about. Sadly, they exit till date and go about bringing ridicule to the body of Christ.

They don’t miss Bible studies; they are the first to come to church on Sundays to help clean the pews; they are never absent in vigils; Always ready for evangelism and stand in the fore front of promoting denominational doctrines. However, no ounce of righteousness is in their veins and blood.

The ‘Timothy’ you see in the church is a thief outside; a Christian on Sunday but a criminal on Monday; a pastor to the congregation but a pagan in his village; a saint he or she may appear but a subtle sinner within. They are religious but not righteous. The Lord identifies with righteousness and even stated that “the righteous shall live by faith” (Roman 1:17; Galatians 3:11) and to behold religiousness without righteousness sickens the Lord. Thus, it breaks His heart.

4. Preaching but don’t practicing. This is similar to point three in a way but with few distinctions. It still speaks of the so called believers who are deceivers of themselves and others; Christians that are strangers to Christ; holding a form of piety but are strangers to the power of it (2 Timothy 3:5).

The Gospel according to Matthew 23 reveals even better their guiles and wiles. “Observe and practice all they tell you; but do not do what they do, for they preach but do not practice (Matthew 23:3).  Some are cowardly enough to say to their followers: “do as I say but don’t do as I do”. And you wonder when such people claim to be truly born again?

5. Craving to fit in. I have heard people say countless of times that ‘if you are not informed, you will be deformed’. There is, however, an element of sense in this statement but sadly enough, most people misconstrue it for wading with the flow and copycatting the throng in doing irrational things.

Here do you have our lads sagging; ladies on spaghetti and bikinis openly without an iota of decency and feminine pride; invention of naked fashion as seen by contemporary celebrities (especially in the entertainment sphere) whom our teens forlornly take as role models; and all sorts of decadence and profligacies nameless to mention.

Our generation is bedeviled by all of these as God watches from heaven daily and grieves in His heart that man could stoop as low as mere animals in conduct and behaviours regarding appearance and lifestyle.

Where Are Your Tears?

Text: Hebrews 7:25; Proverbs 11:30; Mark 16:15

There are tears in the sinner's eyes,
Habits of sin binding heart, hand and feet;
Broken with shame at his sin and defeat,
Hot burning tears coursing down his hot cheek -
There are tears in the sinner's eyes.

There are tears in the sufferer's eyes,
Long weary hours of disease, weakness, pain,
Praying that health be restored once again;
Waiting for healing, but waiting in vain -
There are tears in the sufferer's eyes.

There are tears in discouraged eyes,
Misunderstood by the ones who should know;
No one to love, to compassion bestow,
Fainting, discouraged, with hope burning low -
There are tears in discouraged eyes.

There are tears in non-Christian eyes,
Calling to idols of wood and of stone,
Calling in vain, Christ and Saviour unknown,
Comfortless, helpless, without God, alone -
There are tears in non-Christian eyes.

There are tears in the Saviour's eyes,
Tears for those sinning, discouraged and ill,
Tears for straying ones, out of His will,
Tears for millions unreached by us till -
There are tears in the Saviour's eyes.

But where are the tears in your eyes?
Can you not weep with millions who weep?
Have you no tears for the other lost sheep?
Jesus is weeping! Are you still asleep?
Oh! Where are the tears in your eyes?

A Worldly Spirit, The Worst Heresy

Text: John 15:19, 17:14-16; 1 Corinthians 2:12

In this world there are two kingdoms, contending for the master. Each kingdom has its animating spirit, in which its strength lies, by which all it does is guided, and through which it holds rule among men.

Everything we are or do derives its character and its worth in the sight of God from the spirit in which it is done. This spirit is in each kingdom, not a blind force or an unconscious tendency, but an intelligent power working towards a definite goal. The spirit of the world and the god of this world hold rule over every child of Adam. The spirit which is of God is the power of the living God, working as a divine life in the hearts of those who have received him.

The terrible sin of the fall consisted in this: that man chose the visible, that which this world offered of beauty, and enjoyment, and wisdom, in preference to the unseen, spiritual good of God’s will and favor. And the ruin and punishment of the fall is that man became subject to the power of the seen and temporal, that worldliness became a second nature to him, so that this world was nearer, and clearer to him, and affected him far more than the God of all glory and blessedness, who had created him.

However, little it may be thought or taught, the greatest danger to a child of God is from the spirit of this world secretly and unconsciously influencing his judgment and conduct. And one of his greatest needs is to have his eyes opened to see what the world and its spirit is, and how nothing can free him from it but being entirely possessed by the Spirit of God.

How To Be Sure

Are you sure you are among the chosen few
Who shall enter glory when life on earth is through?
It is not enough to say "the sinner's prayer"
Or assent to the gospel when it is shared.

Your life will be changed and your heart made anew
If the Holy Spirit is indwelling you;
From each and every sin you will turn away
And seek to obey whate'er the Scriptures say.

Your affections will be set on things above,
Your motive t'wards others will be to show love,
Your supreme desire will be to do God's will,
And though you lose all for Him, you'll love Him still.

While these changes cannot save you from your sin,
They provide assurance you've been born again;
If they are not manifested in your life,
Don't rest until you have saving faith in Christ.
